Just in case,

I leave their nests in the window boxes

and old plant hangers and roosting baskets in the holly,

so the Carolina Wrens can survive the frosty night

after a day spent munching my peanut butter suet.

Inside I use blow-up beds for our 13 guests. I watch them all settle in

and I think about other beings caught in the cold.

That’s what the world needs: food all round and safe, roosting places.

Just in case.

This is a roosting basket in use in the breeding season for these two Carolina Wrens. Leaving the baskets out for winter use makes sense. I don’t know if the two wrens use it at once though:
